Ack! Mission Time! Help!

My son is in 4th grade and has to build a mission. He was assigned, Mission Santa Clara de Asís. It's due by March 5th and his teacher told the class they are not allowed to use mission kits. She will fail them if they use a kit because not everyone can afford them. That sucks! Anyway... They must build them from scratch and be creative. I am not crafty at all, nor is my 10 year old son! My son is stressed because he is a strait A student and this is a huge part of his Social Studies grade. Has anyone done this yet with your kids? Any and all advice will be appreciated! We went to the craft store today and looked at the mission kits just to see what our mission is supposed to look like. This had us both very worried! It has to be to scale and an exact replica. To build such a thing using sugar cubes, popsicle sticks and the like will be almost impossible! I looked at every type of putty, floam, playdoh and clay available with my son. We need major help! Thanks! ♥ Hootie & Hoot Jr.

FYI: The picture I used in this blog isn't acccurate! It didn't include the cemetary or courtyard... I found that out the hard way! This project was terrible! LOL, I'm so glad it's over! Here is the link for the pics... (Be Gentle ~ LOL) http://teamsugar.com/group/186693/albums/1093722

I worked on it again today! I finished all the cutting! Thank goodness because my finger is so sore from holding that razor blade! We also got the report typed and done today! So now we just have to start constructing the mission building pieces and get them glued together! After that the fun part starts! The decorating and painting! I'll keep you posted! Thanks everyone for all your tips and advice! ♥ Hootie & Hoot Jr. Special thanks to Leo for all her support and for helping to get me off my lazy bum!

I worked on the mission for 5 hours today! I'm making progress with the razor blade cutting of the mission walls/buildings. If only the teacher would let us use a kit! I am doing all the cutting as my son is only 10. He is not getting anywhere near a razor blade! I should finish the cutting tomorrow sometime. Then we will start building it. Once that is done, glued and set my son will have a blast painting! I will keep you all updated and I will post pictures when it is done! Thanks for all your ideas and support! ♥ Hootie

Sorry, i just got to read this, I know all of the ideas sound great to me. Floral foam, milk boxes, foam board are all great ideas, and standards I would use. They also sell fake dirt and sand for train model sets that would be great to use for texture and stuff like that, they also have the foliage for plants in the train section too, in any Michaels or Hobby Lobby. And also check out the miniatures section in the hobby sotre, you'll be surprised at what all you can find to make it even more authentic wiothout having to use the Mission kit.

great ideas, everyone, but I love the idea of painting noodles red as mominator suggested. You HAVE to post a picture of what it finally came out like! I can't wait to see it!

You could also paint some elbow macaroni noodles red and use that for a roof.

You Sugars are awesome! Keep the ideas coming please! I am so happy with all your advice!!! Huge Hugs ♥ Hootie

Do you have a waffle iron? You could use hard waffles as the roofing material and paint it red. Also foam board is great to work with (quarter inch foam board has paper on both front and back and foam in the middle). It's less messy than foam alone and you can draw on it and cut it out with a box cutter. It is very forgiving. Also, you can add some sand to the paint when you paint the outside of the building (paint it before you assemble so it lays flat) to give it the texture of stucco. The foam board would be great for the steps out front of the building, too. You can use a hot glue gun to assemble it. Hope this helps. I know I tend to ramble.

What about foam, like the type in the floral dept, you can use a craft knife to shape it, then you can paint it? *Thank you. My real name... is plain... Jane Jones. (Alice - Closer)

Get a paper crimper to do the roof........boxes and juice cartons for structures! Try to print a pic of the mission and blow it up at Kinkos and cut out the windows to paste on the building! Get the fake palm trees...some BD cake deco sets have them!

Let me think on it. I know you can use boxes and cut and paint them. Buy fake palm trees. Use red legos' for the roof or paint the the box top roof. Usally the teacher sounds like they are counting off more than do. It usually a project for a family and most teachers give a good grade just if you do it no matter what it looks like. Good luck and post pics of your finished project. I am sure teamsugar girlies will be able to help you out more than I can. Good luck :)
