How Do You Source Your Garden Soil?

This weekend in San Francisco, the Annual Great Compost Giveaway will unite gardeners with nutrient-rich "black gold" — finished compost perfect for their gardens. San Francisco residents simply bring their own buckets, containers, or wheelbarrows to pick up five gallons of the custom compost blend, which is made from food scraps and plants collected from restaurants and homes in San Francisco. If you're a local resident, you can find out more about the day's events through Recology's website.

However, we all can't count on our city of residence to bequeath us with great garden soil. Many of us have to buy our own garden topsoil, or create our own by composting at home. Tell me, do you have a backyard compost pile? Have you used your finished compost in your garden?

I have been composting for almost two years. Started by picking up a load of manure from a nearby stable (free!), added our veggie waste, and just mixed and watered regularly. It's nothing fancy -- just a pile in our backyard, and we don't get tons. We definitely supplement it with purchased garden soil, but I like the idea that our food waste helps our garden be more productive!
