Anyone have a Kindle?

So I'm thinking about getting a Kindle...anyone have one? Love it? Why must I have one? Is there an advantage to one of the models over the other?

My boss has an iPad and I checked out her nook app today. I really didn't like the screen. I don't think it'd be very good in the sun either. I'm debating buying a nook. But I've been saying that for the past year too. :)

wtf my tracker hates me again!?!? i'm not sure how they perform in the sun, but i know a friend of mine takes her nook to the park all the time so she can read while her little ones play. haha i love the ipad (surprise), but i would never buy one for use as an e-reader. those suckers get heavy! and the screens aren't so great for reading.

My ears were burning. Now I know why! ;) I don't have an e-reader, despite being probably the perfect candidate for one. Maybe one day, but I'm not ready to jump in just yet.

I have a real aversion to touch screen keypads as well. It's one of the reasons I'll probably never have an iPhone and I'm an Apple lover! They just never seem to work as good as a real keyboard. Color screen for me isn't too important...I'd be reading books more than magazines. I also don't think an iPad would be all that great for long term reading...they're bigger and heavier than a Kindle or a Nook, so I imagine my arms getting tired of holding it (kinda like they do when you're holding a hardbound book for long periods of time).

"Plus, I am generally opposed to Apple products. " Ok Sy! ;) Thanks Kim! I really haven't done the research so I have no idea. Jess - You're probably right about Apple products busting after a while though I have a 2nd gen Nano that's going strong! Those were built much more solidly than then newer ones I think since they were mostly plastic with only a little screen and now they're all screen. I've heard nothing but bad things about the latest Nano.

I don't think the iPad was intended for reading. It has the same screen as a computer screen from what I know of it. It's also not as small. It's small for a computer but it's not Kindle small or book small. It's also more expensive and as much as I love my MacBook, everyone knows Mac products were designed to fail after a certain time period (Applecare is the best investment ever).

For me, it's mostly cost. Even though it's a gift, I still looked at what you get for what you pay, or rather, what you get that I would actually use for what you pay. An ipad is twice as much as a Nook Color and what, 2.5 times as much as Kindle? The color Nook has the ability to download some Android apps and to browse the web (wi-fi only, though, not 3G), so, to me, it's kind of in-between an ipad and a Kindle. Also, I already have a netbook that I use when I'm going to be doing a lot of typing on the go. I hate doing extensive typing on a touchscreen (it really slows me down), so I wouldn't use an ipad for that. I do see why a lot of people would just opt for an ipad, though! Plus, I am generally opposed to Apple products. (Just kidding.)

Why not just get an iPad? It seems like iPad has made the Nook/Kindle obsolete or am I missing something?

It was mainly the color screen, since I'm also looking to use it for magazines. I also like that it has more storage. I did find two disadvantages to the Nook Color, though. The battery life is only about 8 hours and the screen has more glare than the Kindle, so it can't really be used in the bright sun. I'm looking to use it for bus and Metro rides mostly, though, so neither of those things will be an issue for me.

Is there a reason you want the Nook over the Kindle Kim? Aside from the color capabilities I'm guessing...

I am getting one of the color Nooks for Christmas. I am pretty excited about it! (My mother won't let me have my gifts before Christmas, even when I know what they are/have seen them, so I have to wait.) I'm hoping there are some good magazines, etc. I can use it for, in addition to books.

There is a netflix for paperback books. http://www.booksfree.com/ What we had through the library was overdrive.com It is a library site for ebooks and audiobooks.

It would be kinda neat if there was a Netflix for ebooks though...

I have no idea....I just figured it was website based. :ponder:

Love how a post I created doesn't show up in my Tracker. :oy: Anyway, I know with the Kindle you can still read in full sun.

snarky, with a nook and/or kindle do you know if you can see the screen in the sunlight? or do you need to be in a good amount of shade?

i know waaaaay more people with nooks than kindles. i'm not sure why, but i think it might have something to do with what kas said. anyway, i've heard no complaints from any of them about their nooks.
kastarte2 kastarte2 3 years 40 weeks
I think I may be getting a Nook for Christmas. At the library, on of the complaints I would hear about Kindle is that you could only read ebooks from the Kindle library. So patrons couldn't read the ebooks that we offered on overdrive.com and supposedly they could only get books from Amazon. I don't know any of this for a fact though. Just word of mouth.

good question. I'd like to know more about this as well. It would be a great present but hesitate to get one until I'm sure they're really worth it.
