Anyone know anything about gerbils?
We went to Petsmart today to get some food for Brees, and our kiddos talked us into buying a pair of gerbils. Very cute and very friendly critters so far. :) We got a cage with a bunch of tunnels & a wheel, food, a Tiki house, things for them to chew on, snacks, etc.. I don't think they are deprived at the moment. :)
The problem is neither me or Jason have ever owned one. We've had both hamsters and guinea pigs, so I'm thinking the gerbils will be similar. From what I've read online, they seem to be similar, except we have to be careful of their tails because they'll break off (ouch) if we're too rough with them.
They don't mind being handled, they're running around in their balls (the kind where they can run around in the house and avoid being eaten by the cats), they come to us when we open the cage, so they're really nice so far (which surprises me). I think they're going to make great pets. :)
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for them. Can we give them snacks, such as fruits or veggies? Basically all the little things like that. I bought a book about gerbils, but I've only skimmed it so far. Hopefully I'll get a chance to read it tonight.
