Audiobooks, yay or nay?

Books are my friends

I am an addict to novels. I love the smell of a new book and reading one long before it gets turned over to hollywood. So my question is, do you buy books on cd (or itunes)? Or is there just something about the old fashioned way that is part of the experience?

I love reading, and I'm a huge fan of being able to hold a book, turn the pages, and imagine the way the characters look/sound for myself. That being said, I'm often busy with college courses or work, and time I would like to devote to casual reading has to be spent doing something more productive. I like audiobooks because they allow me to "read" at times when I can't study or do work, such as when I'm driving. I also started listening to them during long runs, because I can get lost in the story line and forget about the little aches and pains that pop up.

I could never really listen to an audiobook; I always zone out when I'm on my ipod. Plus, I never remember the details unless I read it. I like my books just the way they are.

I enjoy reading books - however sometimes a book on tape is called for - like when traveling on a long road trip. When I was in college, I would check out 7-10 books on tape during my Spring Break road trip - it's a great way to spend the time when the radio won't pick up any channels - this is way before Satellite radio.

I take my books any way I can get them! Mostly I prefer to actually read a book, but like hvanness I love audiobooks for long trips, especially if you are driving alone (btw audiobooks at the library are free). I also liked them when I used to have a longer work commute though now it's more difficult to listen to them in the car everyday because I have kids, etc. Occassionally if I have a particularly long chore at home, like doing 6 loads of laundry, then I'll throw an audiobook on instead of the TV.

I love reading a book, but I have to say that audiobooks have been a staple in my car for my husband and I for long road trips. I rent them from Cracker Barrel Restaurants. I pick out a "book" at my local Cracker Barrel, listen to it all the way to North Carolina, return it to one of their Craker Barrels, and then pick up another one for the trip home. It cost like $4. It's awesome, because buying them from the store is very expensive! Just don't forget to return it! I think you have a full two weeks to listen to it. It makes car trips fly!

I have been meaning to try a crime-related audiobook strictly for my car when I'm driving alone, but that hasn't happened yet. I did do the Harry Potter audiobooks for the kids on roadtrips. Let me say it was good for EVERYONE! But I prefer my kids to SEE me reading in the hopes that they will follow suit. It worked! So, a bit of both really.

I love audio books. It's nice to just relax and enjoy the story sometimes.

I feel like Cocca, I always pictured me sitting in a huge window pane reading a good book. I like to get lost inside of my books away from reality. There is nothing like reading a good book while it's raining outside. I will be so distracted with a audio book, woulnd't focus no not at all. Cin Cin

I actually love the act of reading, so I could never trade in my novels for audiobooks. However, I can understand where they would be appealing to some people - it's just not down my alley.

I tried one and it simply didn't work for me. I was using it in the car and everytime I got back in the car and it started, I couldn't remember what happened last. The story was much more appealing when I actually read the book itself.

I've never tried an audio book, because I doubt I would like it. Books are meant to be read imo. I don't think I could focus on an audio book, and I don't think it would leave the same impression with me. BUT people with vision problems may appreciate them. -------------------------------------- "The years, No doubt, Have changed me"

I am of the books are meant to be read state of mind. I can't stand audiobooks! I don't get into them as much and I tend to forget them much easier. I need to hold it and to really immerse myself in the story - which I won't do if it's just audio.

i love to read books, but i use to have this job as a processor, punching in numbers all day at a desk (very boring btw) and all my co-workers would bring in their audio books and share. let me tell you, it made my day go by way faster! so, because of that, i am a fan of audiobooks, but it's always nice to sit around on a rainy day and read :)
