Bike On: Two Cycling Events

They say that nobody walks in LA, but some Angelenos are trying to change that. This Sunday, Los Angeles (aka City of Cars) will close seven miles of city streets for CicLAvia. On Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., streets will be closed to cars and turned into a giant city park where pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters can roam freely and safely. LA mayor Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa explained the history of public street closure to NPR, "CicLAvia started over thirty years in Bogota, Colombia as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets." Get out your sneakers and check out the map and list of events here.

Roll back the calendar by a day if cycling is your thing and you don't live in LA. On Saturday, Oct. 9, pedal with your friends at a Trek Ride for Breast Cancer Awareness. Held in over 100 locations in the US and Canada, you can ride 10 or 25 miles in a "family friendly atmosphere" for the cause. All registration fees are donated to the Breast Cancer Research Fund. All events begin at a civilized hour — 10 a.m. So you can have your coffee in a leisurely manner then cycle with your gal pals, kids, or other loved ones.

Despite ever increasingly aggressive treatment programs, especially chemotherapy in the more advanced cases, the death rate per 100,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer....why, the death rate is virtuously unchanged 1970 vs. 2006! Come on, 32 deaths per 100,000 (1970) versus 26 per 100,000 (2006). The improvements with ever more toxic chemotherapy and radiotherapy (5,000 R vs 6,500R) is tiny! Wake up America! This is just another scam by big pharma!
