COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.

COSTELLO: I want to talk about the unemployment rate in America.

ABBOTT: Good Subject. Terrible Times. It's 9%.

COSTELLO: That many people are out of work?

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: You just said 9%.

ABBOTT: 9% Unemployed.

COSTELLO: Right 9% out of work.

ABBOTT: No, that's 16%.

COSTELLO: Okay, so it's 16% unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, that's 9%.

COSTELLO: WAIT A MINUTE. Is it 9% or16%?

ABBOTT: 9% are unemployed. 16% are out of work.

COSTELLO: IF you are out of work you are unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, Obama said you can't count the "Out of Work" as the
unemployed. You have to look for work to be unemployed.

ABBOTT: No, you miss his point.

COSTELLO: What point?

ABBOTT: Someone who doesn't look for work can't be counted with those
who look for work. It wouldn't be fair.

COSTELLO: To whom?

ABBOTT: The unemployed.

COSTELLO: But they are ALL out of work.

ABBOTT: No, the unemployed are actively looking for work. Those who
are out of work gave up looking and if you give up, you are no
longer in the ranks of the unemployed.

COSTELLO: So if you're off the unemployment roles that would count
as less unemployment?

ABBOTT: Unemployment would go down. Absolutely!

COSTELLO: The unemployment just goes down because you don't look
for work?

ABBOTT: Absolutely it goes down. That's how Obama gets it to 9%.
Otherwise it would be 16%. He doesn't want you to read about 16%

COSTELLO: That would be tough on his reelection.

ABBOTT: Absolutely.

COSTELLO: Wait, I got a question for you. That means there are two
ways to bring down the unemployment number?

ABBOTT: Two ways is correct.

COSTELLO: Unemployment can go down if someone gets a job?

ABBOTT: Correct.

COSTELLO: And unemployment can also go down if you stop looking for
a job?

ABBOTT: Bingo.

COSTELLO: So there are two ways to bring unemployment down, and the
easier of the two is to have obama's supporters stop looking for work.

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like the Obama Economy Czar.

COSTELLO: I don't even know what the hell I just said!

ABBOTT: Now you're thinking like Obama.

"But if you want to start school after you've gone on UE they will stop it." This person was going to school w/out the state catching on-it was killing me because I had seen that the biz was going under and jumped to another job. Other person rode it to the end. Personally, like you, if I'm happy with my work, I don't care how it's officially rated, and when I can find something to tide me over between jobs, I'll do that and leave UE for people who honestly need it. I believe in building up the pot to help people, I believe we should be generous to it and respectful of it.

Yeah the whole school thing needs to be worked out. I understand if you're already in school and last a job that's a different story. But if you want to start school after you've gone on UE they will stop it. What they should say is if you want to go to school in the evening that's fine. As for being underemployed I realize most people who are would consider themselves to be. However by classification I am underemployed and do not consider myself to be because I'm doing something I Love to do. Although it's part time I've finally got my foot in the door working in a professional kitchen and quite frankly I can care less that I'm not making what I use to because my Soul is dancin baby.

I had two friends on unemployment at different times: one was kind of hounded about her job hunting efforts - the check was held if the UE office didn't feel she offered sufficient proof; the other turned in cursory reports and was actually taking classes rather than looking for work. I think it works as a general snapshot - the thumbnail we get on the news. We know there are people unemployed so long they don't even bother, or so underemployed they might as well not work. We know that serious causes of unemployment in the past decade have been downsizing, outsourcing and corporate collapse - so, to me, that's what we should focus on fixing.

I was gonna say I don't buy the measure they use. There's way too many ways of applying & circumstances in doing so that they can't measure. For instance in my case yes there was a section on the back of my claim form to list who you I applied with, who the manager is etc. But I didn't have to fill that part out. Most people apply electronically as requested by the employer and many of the ads are anonymous as far as company name because they don't want to be over whelmed with phone inquiries.

I've never collected unemployment, but I think the government has you keep track of your job search efforts & mostly takes you at your word. (I just post articles that interest me. Doing it here keeps from upsetting conservative friends & family on other sites.:) )

Geez Steph are you working for Tre now? You are pumping out those articles girl. On this subject what in the world do they use as a method of measure for how many people are looking for work? If I respond to an ad and send them my resume how on earth does any one besides the employer and myself know I applied?

The funny thing is, the original version of this validly focused on the overall absurdity of ever separating out discouraged workers from unemployed statistics. Changing the end to pretend that President Obama is solely responsible for the separation revealed the adapter’s ignorance and bias.

"Geez, I'd source this so no one thought I wrote something so lame." I didn't ask about the source.
Grandpa Grandpa 3 years 28 weeks
Then why ask about the source? oh that is right, your being snide. NM
stephley stephley 3 years 29 weeks
Had I thought you wrote it, I wouldn't have immediately suggested you source it. I hope you pointed out to the sender that discouraged workers have had a separate stat for years (maybe explain the whole U-3. U-4, U-5, U-6 thing to them), so suggesting it's Obama sleight of hand is just wrong and really ruins any potential humor in the joke.
Grandpa Grandpa 3 years 29 weeks
It was sent to me as an email. I doubt anyone would think this was written by me 9other then you that is) ;-)
stephley stephley 3 years 29 weeks
Geez, I'd source this so no one thought I wrote something so lame. Did you only just learn that statistically and bureaucratically there's a distinction between unemployed and discouraged workers or why didn't it amuse you under past presidents?
