Christmas spending...How much is too much?

Christmas is right around the corner, and the presents under the tree are piling up. Do you ever feel that your kids just get way too many presents? I don't like to go overboard with the kids at Christmas, family members buy them plenty. I get some toys that I know they'll love, but they are not big ticket gifts. My husband is opposite - he wants to go crazy and run through Toys R Us buying all kinds of toys - even though he knows this house is being overrun by all the toys we have already! What is your philosophy on presents for the kids at Christmas?

Compared to most people, our Christmas is very reasonable. The kids don't get so much from anyone other than us, but we stick to a limit. As they've gotten older, they tend to go for large-ticket items, which means there are less presents to buy, and much easier shopping as far as time!

I have bought a few things, but not over board if you ask me. A little table, some doll stuff, doll house gear and some puzzles. I am actually prepping the house for the over run that will be occuring when we bring home the gifts from all of the relatives. She is the first girl granddaughter on both sides - so it will be puking pink and baby dolls around here in a few days!

Our family buys her a lot of little toys and stuff, so we try to get her things she needs like outfits and then we throw in a couple toys we know she'll like a lot. She's still too little to really want anything so i suppose christmas's will just get harder from here on out...

When we were kids almost all of our presents were from our parents (Santa). Maybe one or two gifts from other family members like our grandparents and aunts/uncles. Since I don't have any kids yet, I tend to spoil my nieces and nephews. Get them the big things like the video games or designer purses. But what a relief for my brothers and sisters! Raising kids everyday they don't all always have the money and can stick to the smaller, less expensive gifts or the necessary items like socks or movies. I think it's all relative to your budget. There's no right or wrong answer.

They usually get so much from relatives and friends- it is a bit overwhelming. I try to get a bigger (not necessarily big ticket item) that they can play with and have been asking for, some smaller toys and stocking stuffers, and some clothes (they could care less about). We need to purge very soon, so "I said" we have to give away a toy this year for every one we get and keep. It is a matter of me sitting down and sorting things out, too, so we'll see how that works. I have been over run by Legos, Playmobile, and super heroes by my boy- I am about to lose my mind and know they'll be getting more of the same!

Anything that is appreciated and doesn't bankrupt me is enough. I usually go w/more clothes (luckily my kids LOVE clothes), and a couple of toys. They have so much crap already that I've stopped buying so many toys. I try to stick to stuff I know they won't destroy as well, age appropriate stuff. No ipods, cameras, etc, they are 9, 6, and 2, and not responsible enough to take proper care (losing, dropping, etc). *Thank you. My real name... is plain... Jane Jones. (Alice - Closer)

Like, Ashcwebb, mostly all my presents came from my parents, some as Santa. As a parent, I try to get mine some of the things they asked for, some surprises, and some needs, like clothes. I do what I can afford, thats where my limit lies, if I have more cash, I will buy more. ~ Happy Holidays! ~

We were spoiled at Christmas. But we didn't have ANY presents given to us by any other fmaily members (grandparents, cousins, anuts, etc.) and my parents tried to make up for it so we wouldn't really notice.
