DIY Beauty: Dry Skin


Dry skin seems to be one of those things that none of us can escape. Whether it's your elbows or your face, trying one of these recipes may be able to help you find a little relief. Or just give your face that soft, smooth glow!

Kiwi Facial Cleanser

1 kiwi fruit
2 tablespoons of plain yogurt
1 tablespoon orange water
1 tablespoon apricot or almond oil
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon finely ground almonds
2 drops orange (or your favorite citrus) essential oil

Puree the kiwi fruit in a food processor until liquid. During processing, add yogurt, orange water, almond or apricot oil, and ground almonds. Process until thick and cream like. Add essential and stir to mix. To apply, massage gently over neck, face and décolleté to cleanse. Rinse well. Makes one application.

Strawberry Shortcake Bath

This is a rich, fruit-scented bath that is perfect for dry, delicate skin - and for kids of all ages!

1/2 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 cups water
1 tablespoon cold-pressed castor oil

Place all ingredients into a blender and process on High until you have a smooth, creamy liquid. Pour into a warm bath and stir well.

Avocado Facial Mask

Avocados and honey are particularly moisturizing, perfect for dry skin.

½ avocado
¼ cup honey

Mash the avocado in a bowl, then stir in honey. Apply to skin and leave for 10 minutes. Rinse face with a cool washcloth.

Milk Mask

1 tsp powdered milk
1 tbsp runny honey
1 tsp aloe vera gel
2 drops essential oil

Mix ingredients well, apply to face, let sit for 15 minutes, wash off with warm water. This recipe is enough for two.

Dry Skin Mask

Mix 1 tsp. of butter in 1 teaspoon of water. Apply it thoroughly into all the dry areas and leave for 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

Banana Face Pack for Dry Skin

Mash half cup of natural yogurt, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1/4 ripe banana. Apply this pack on face and neck and leave for 10 minutes and then rinse off.

Facial Mask for Dry Skin

1 egg yolk
1 small avocado
1/2 banana
2 teaspoons carrot juice
2-3 teaspoons white clay
1 drop rose essential oil

Mash avocado and banana with the back of a fork until they forma thick, creamy mixture. Stir in egg yolk to combine. Add carrot juice and mix will. Add 1 teaspoon of clay and mix well. If mixture is a bit runny, add more clay. Stir the mixture until a smooth paste forms. Add the essential oil last and stir to incorporate. To use, apply a layer to clean face and neck avoiding eyes. Rest for about 10 minutes (longer if you'd like). Rinse well with warm water and follow with toner and moisturizer. The shelf life of this product is limited by the fresh ingredients. It should be used immediately after it is made.

Homemade Rose Water

To be used in place of a toner.

Freshly picked, unsprayed rose petals

Pack the top of a double boiler half full with the rose petals. Cover witih filtered, mineral, or rainwater. Put a lid on the pan and simmer over a very, very gentle for 1 hour. Remove the top pan and allow to cool, then squish the petals between your hands to squeeze out all the liquid. Discard the used petals and repeat, using fresh petals in teh original water. Cool, then strain the water into a sterilized bottle or jar. You get only a small quantity, though it should last 1 to 2 weeks, longer in the refrigerator.

Apricot Softening Mask

2 fresh apricots
1 teaspoon avocado oil

Blanch the apricots in just boiled water for 1 minute to make it easy to peel off the skins. Slice to remove the stones, then mash the flesh to a smooth pulp, adding the oil in a trickle. Spread onto face, avoiding the eyes and mouth, and relax for 20 minutes. Rinse well with warm water, pat dry, and moisturize as usual.

Egg Mask for Dry Skin

Mix together 1 raw egg and 1 tablespoon ofhoney. Spread on your face and neck and let sit for 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse well with tepid water.

Potato Cleanser

An easy way to clean the face is to rub it all over with a raw slice of potato. Potatoes contain juice with vitamin C tha tis mild and soothing, making it a great cure for those with dry skin or even eczema.

Alexander the Great Banana Mask

1/2 mashed ripe banana
1 teaspoon sunflower oil (or any light oil. This can be omitted for normal skin)

Stir the mashed banana in a small bowl with a fork until smooth and creamy. Add the oil and mix well. Spread on clean skin using fingertips and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry skin. Discard any excess mask.

I'm sure that you can find castor oil on the internet or in a local drug/vitamin store.

I don't know if I'd drink the water! But I love the name of that one. :) Some of the essential oils can get expensive, but if you just buy one or two that you know that you're going to use in the long run, it's not too bad!
