Do You Know Where Does The Real Hair Extensions Come From?

Many women in America purchase real hair extensions, but aren't aware of where it come from. The most desirable hair for extensions comes from India; with 25% coming from a Hindu temple where women shave their heads in sacrifice for their religious beliefs. The temple makes 18 million dollars a year selling the hair.

I like hair extensions, but I always make sure that they're ethically sourced. I just did a review on some of my favorites. http://belladonna-emily.blogspot.com/

I had extensions a couple of years ago (very damaging!) and they were from India. I had asked. I had no idea they made that much on them! I thought my hair stylist was banking, but they are the ones who have it going on! Crazy. I sincerely hope the profits go toward only worthy causes and never greed.

i heard about that.....wow is all i can say. i also heard that those women had NO idea what they were doing with that hair.

Thanks for sharing, MartiniLush! To answer your question "I am not sure that they would care if their hair cost a fortune if they were doing this to fulfill their religious obligations. Does that make sense?" -- What I was trying to say is that they never though the temple would keep their hair and make money out of it instead of trowing away...

The conceot just seemed a little strange to me when I first heard it. I didn't realise it would cost that amount to run a temple! :jawdrop: I have never used a hair extension in my life, but I understand why some do. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Thank God, for my naturally clingy nature" - Olive

At some point in the future we are going to laugh at all this hair extension stuff. It sort of blows my mind that people feel the need for it.

I'm with you, Martini! And thanks for sharing the story about your co-worker. I couldn't find anything negative about this online, but I still wondered where the money went to. What she said makes a lot of sense, though.

Well, Jinx, the article says it takes millions of dollars to run the temple complex every year, some of that money goes for that. I was curious after I saw you comment and asked a coworker who is Indian about this. She said that it is really GOOD that this is going on, in her view! She said that many social services that we take for granted here are not provided by the government there. Most of those services are provided by the temples and religious organizations - so really, this money most likely is going to support those who need help in the community. I guess if she is from there and thinks it is a good thing, I don't have a problem with it...

To me, something seems a little off that the temple makes 18 million dollars from hair that is gathered out of religious obligation. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Thank God, for my naturally clingy nature" - Olive

Found this article: http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/display.article?id=2294 It would seem that they are fulfilling a religious obligation when they do this. I am ok with this, if that is the case. Doesn't sound like anyone is being forced to do this, and I am assuming that the proceeds go for the temple maintenance and to promote the programs the temple supports.

18 million dollars? and what does this temple do with the money?

Thanks, Martini! You are so sweet. I will see what I can find, too.
MartiniLush MartiniLush
lilkim, I will search around and see what I can find and will post what I find here, ok? Tabloid, I am not sure that they would care if their hair cost a fortune if they were doing this to fulfill their religious obligations. Does that make sense?

Oh yeah, can you believe more then a half of these women don't know their hair cost a fortune? Yep... Completly insane.

That's how it seems to me too, Martini! Of course, if there's a negative side to this (women are being forced, the money's not going where it's supposed to, etc.), I'd like to hear about it so I can be more informed.
MartiniLush MartiniLush
Agreed, lilkim! It seems that they are doing their "religious duty" and the temple is adding to it's coffers, I am assuming, to help it's members.
lilkimbo lilkimbo
Interesting. Although, if these women are willingly getting their heads shaved and the temple is making money off it, it seems like a win-win to me.

Sadly, I couldn't find the video on youtube of that episode on Oprah. It was more shocky.
