Dog recommendations for small-home living?

I live in a 2-bedroom, 800-sq. ft. condo (I own) and am interested in getting a dog.  I've looked online, but all I can find for breed recommendations are pups that yap or are bad with other animals.  I have 2 cats.  Any suggestions?

Japanese Chins are great for small spaces and they are very cat like in behavior. My chins get along with cats well. They also tend to be very quiet. The only drawback is that they shed so they take more maintenance for their coats than some breeds. They are also an expensive breed - but once you do your research you understand the expense. They are a great little breed.
