Eating habits

Hey everyone, first of all I love the whole sugar website, but anyways, I have a major problem. I love to eat and sometimes it's uncontrollable like a drug. I am super good at exercising and I go to the gym every day for about 2 1/2 hours. Today, for instance, i ate very well during the day but when I came home from the gym I just binged.

Here's what I normally eat.

Breakfast - veggie sausage patty, egg beater, piece of cheddar cheese, and a cup of soy milk. very low cal and healthy.

lunch - almonds and an apple, or some sort of fruit. occassionally some sort of vegetable soup.

dinner - my parents always make dinner but usually its 2 vegetables with a lean meat ( we don't eat red meat) or soup.

as you can see, my diet is healthy during the day. but then, i'll go to the gym, and when i get home i eat like a hog. when i came home today i ate four bags of doritos ( they were the baked kind and they wre single serving bags, so they were only about 400 calories, and i had a small handful of dried bluebetrries, and I had oatmeal. today on the way home from the gym my dad had to stop and get gas and i did so good with not buying anything to eat there since it's all junk food. but when i got home i realized i was hungry and out of anger i ate even more. now i realize that i should have just gotten an ice cream for 180 calroies rather than over 600 calories of snacks. but its not usually anger, its just that i am so addicted to food, and i can't stop. i'm not able to lose weight. Are there any tips for curbing my appetite, especially late at night. i did burn off almost 500 calroies at the gym today, so i'm not too bummed but this happens everyday!

I totally agree with the above comments. From my own experience, I can tell you that your body knows what it needs. It's okay to have snacks and ice cream from time to time... if you're really craving those things then it's possible that there is something in them that your body wants. The key is to not over-eat, and to give your body whatever it needs. Everyone is different, but that's what works for me. Eating smaller meals and healthy snacks throughout the day is also a great idea... you'll actually burn more calories and you won't feel as hungry. Also, I've found that weight-lifting is very effective. Good Luck!

I agree with E Dubs, your coming home from the gym and binging because your replacing what little protein and energy your earlier daily diet gives you. You should probably see a nutritionalist to find out what you need to eat to match your excercise routine.

Thanks everybody. I was the one who wrote this, I don't know why it was published as anonymous. I checked out the book on amazon.com and read many 5-star reviews for it, and I think I'm going to buy a copy within the week. I love to read anyway. The brushing my teeth thing is definitely one I'll have to try. To Tina, the reason I go for a long time is because it's a way to get me out of the house and it really relaxes me. I'm only actually working out for about 2 hours. The rest of the time I'm either takling to someone, or in the sauna. I also like your cheese idea. I also like the protein in the middle of the day. Thanks guys for your help I appreciate it. :)

You can't be surprised that you eat a bunch after working out that much when you just aren't getting enough calories during the day to support your lifestyle. Add more protein during the day to keep you going. By not eating enough during the day your setting yourself up for this to happen. Help yourself out.

A good tip for late night hunger I use is to brush your teeth, the mint is said to curb your hunger plus psychologically you've psyched yourself into the stage where you're ready for bed.

I have struggled with eating issues my whole life so i understand totally what you are going through. I don't think that you are eating enough to support how much you work out... that is going to make you hungry and your body will crave things. this will cause binges. The healthiest thing to do is to eat several small meals through out the day. If i were you i would add slow cooked oatmeal to breakfast a long burning carb like that will keep you full longer. Then instead of eating the cheese with breakfast i would bring it with me and have it between breakfast and lunch. I also would suggest a piece of chicken or something of higher protein with lunch. that will keep you full longer. have a snack about 30 mins before going to the gym (maybe whole wheat bread with peanut butter or something like that) then eat dinner. I know it will seam like you are eating a lot more at first but its all healthy and i promise it will help you curb cravings. Also Why are you spending 2 1/2 hours at the gym each day? That seams like a very long time. I used to work out like that everyday. Now i only work out about 45 mins a day and i am in better shape than i was then, because i have learned to take care of myself. If you feel that you are losing control of what you eat try brushing your teeth that usually works for me. The break in eating combined with the minty taste usually cuts down on cravings. But if i were you i would focus on eating good healthy food in multiple meals through out the day. The more meals that you eat the better your metablolism is, and the better your body will burn fat. I would seriousy recommend the book Overcoming Overeating by Carol Munter. Amazon sells it but you could probably also order it through your local bookstore.
