Five Days of Blue Dahlia: Day Three

After years of loving neutral eye makeup, I think I may be ready to move on to something more daring. Enter the Estée Lauder Blue Dahlia palette ($42). The first color collection from creative makeup director Tom Pecheux is full of rich turquoise, navy, and blue shades — all of which are bolder than what I usually wear.

I've already taken baby steps by wearing blue along the lash line, and this peacock-colored look was fun. So this time, I'm going to go for more drama. To see how it worked,

So here we are. I began by applying the sparkly white shade all over the eyelid, extending the color to the brow line. You can't really see it in the photo, but it was subtle and pretty in real life. Then, I applied the turquoise shadow all over the lid, and blended it softly so there wasn't a weird line of demarcation. Using the shadows with a damp brush gave more color payoff, so I decided to highlight the outer corners of my eyes the dark blue shadow. Finally, I used a small, damp eye shadow brush to apply the navy eye shadow along my lashes.

Overall, I liked the color, and was surprised by how fancypants it made me look. The next time I try wearing such intense makeup, I'll set aside more time. When you make a mistake using taupe shadow, it's nearly imperceptible. But if you slip up with blue, it's obvious, which means my rush job could have looked a lot better. Oh, and the blue underneath the eyes? That's not shadow. That's lack of sleep and misplaced concealer.

Two more looks to come! Any suggestions or requests?

Thanks, all! It has been fun to come up with different ways to wear color. The nice thing about the palette is that if you want to wear a lot of blue, you can; if you prefer a more neutral look, you can use the taupe/white shadows and then the navy shadow along the lash line.

I like it. Go bolder. Add more of the dark blue on the corners.
