UPDATED WITH CLOSEUP OF STEPS!!
As promised to Aud and Whip last night in chat here are a few pictures of the Exorcist steps in Georgetown. The Exorcist is one of my older brother's favorite movies but I don't want to be so scared that I peep my pants so I haven't gotten up the nerve to watch it yet even though I love scary movies. I have actually been to these steps 3 times since I have lived here but I didn't have my camera the first time. The following pictures are from my second and third trips.
I had read online that the house that they actually used as a background for the outside scenes was in the same area and I knew that my brother would be super excited if I got pictures of it. The people that used to live in the house got so sick of all the fans after the movie came out that they put a large privacy fence around the house to keep them out. When my mom came to visit last October (the first picture) we ventured down to Georgetown to see the steps and look for the house. It was already starting to get dark out and after we climbed all 75 steps we weren't having much luck locating the house. We finally ran into someone and asked them where it was, we had just walked past it. So we went back up the hill and saw it; the gate to the fence was open so we decided to be nosy nelly's and try to get a quick picture. As we were fixing to go in a guy came out and said that yes it was the house and to come on in and take a look. STUPID STUPID STUPID as we were we went on in; he kept trying to lure us further in deeper into the yard that was very dimly lit. We got extremely creeped out so we high tailed it out of there quick, fast, and in a hurry! We couldn't believe that we were stupid enough to actually go in there. After looking around online today I came to find out that we weren't even at the right house! The actual house used is immediately to the left at the top of the steps and we were at a house that was a few doors down to the right side.
The spooky Exorcist Steps in Georgetown are sure to give you the creeps...not to mention a good cardio workout if you decide to tackle them. The Exorcist Steps
36th Street between Prospect Street and M Street
Although no ghosts have been spotted there, the Exorcist Steps played a major part in one of the creepiest modern day ghost stories of all time. The 97 very steep and treacherous stone steps were the scene of two violent deaths in the 1973 blockbuster movie, The Exorcist. Prior to the release of the movie, the steps, which were always considered to have a haunted feeling, were called the Hitchcock Steps.
Visitors to Georgetown enjoy seeing the steps and the nearby house used in the movie at 3600 Prospect Street. In the movie, it appears as if the windows of the house look down upon the steps, which in reality is not the case. The house is actually about a block away from the entrance of the steps. Nevertheless, the Exorcist Steps are eerie, spooky and fun to see, although not a good idea for anyone who suffers from vertigo.
Here are a couple of videos that I found on You Tube:
