wore a girdle?

I recently ordered a dress online that didn't fit me right. So I was telling my grandmother that it was a little snug in the chest and hips to which she replied "Wear a girdle."
I realized that I have never worn a girdle. I have seen them. Both my grandmothers wore them when I was a child. I don't know anyone who still wears them (or admits to it)... so I thought I'd ask if you ladies ever have...

No, I have never wore a girdle. But I have done Spanx, and I am sure it is pretty much the same thing.
