Help! Is There Anyway I Can Break Up Clumpy Brown Sugar?

Hey KG's, I went to make something with brown sugar the other day and discovered that my brown sugar was all clumped up. These balls are hard as rocks. Is there anything I can do to make it soft? Or should I just throw the rocks away? I appreciate your advice.

a little piece of apple peel will do the trick

These are all great "revivers" for clumpy brown sugar, and if all else fails, use the "rocks" to sweeten coffee or black tea. :)

google "brown sugar stone" that should do it.

It exists. The brown sugar "buddy". My gave me one years ago. It's made of some type of hard ceramic/stone. It looks like a mini gingerbread man. I will ask her for you and get more details.

Actually, yes, you can save this. Put in a big piece of orange peel, and seal up airtight. Works amazingly well!

I put it in a air tight container with a slice of bread. It always works because the moisture from the bread goes to the sugar and breaks the clumps up.

Like nikkeeb said, the microwave trick works for immediate use. You can also put some sliced apples and the sugar in an airtight container. Leave overnight or until the sugar is soft again. I don't know why it works, but it does.

i believe i had this issue a few years ago and found a solution via the microwave. i think back then i just put it in the microwave for a little bit until it unclumped, but i read some advice that said when microwaving, put your sugar in a bowl and microwave with a glass of water (separate from your bowl of sugar)...i guess the moisture from the water helps out there.
