How Soon Is Too Soon to Book Holiday Travel?

While still tallying up grand totals for Summer travels, some people are already thinking about Winter plans! This question was shared by SavvySugar reader morganashley in the Savvy Q + A group:

Christmas in July? Not quite, but my mom is already nagging me about holiday destinations. For December! True, we usually visit locations with lodging that books up fast — often well over a year in advance for the prime places — and flights are unguaranteed to drop drastically before then. Still it's so hard to wrap my head around a vacation for five months away. From what days I'd take off work to how long I'd want to stay, am I the only one with a family member who plans so far in advance? Have any of you booked Christmas or even Thanksgiving flights yet?

Finding cheap airfare to Hawaii (where my parents live) for the holidays is not easy. The earliest I've booked holiday travel was in April, if you can believe that! I paid about $400, and I'm glad I booked that early. By the time November rolled around, tickets were around $800. That was around 3 years ago. I haven't been back to Hawaii for the holidays the past 2 years because it was too expensive.

Oh, I should have mentioned though that the 2 day in advance flight was a flight on Christmas Eve.

I once booked holiday travel 2 days in advanced. Cost me $20 to fly from FL to NJ. Thank you, Spirit Airlines! I usually book in the beginning of November though.

If I ever tried to get my boyfriend to pin down days off this early in advance he'd lose his mind.

The furthest I travel during the holidays is about a half an hour by car, so thankfully I don't have to worry about this!
