Bedrest Bash: Diaper Cake Decor

I love the idea of a diaper cake. Unfortunately, I don't like the price they charge for them. So I put my creative juices to work and crafted my own. Making the cake allows you to personalize it to suit the mama–to–be.

To see how to make a diaper cake, .

Supplies you will need:

  • Diapers (I try to find plain ones so the colors won't clash too much)
  • Tulle fabric
  • Ribbons (different sizes and colors)
  • Scissors
  • Tape (optional)
  • Cake platter
  • Cup (can help hold diapers in place)
  • Bottle
  • Candy
  • Extra doo-dads, like pacifiers, onesies, etc.

Check out the gallery below for a step–by–step how–to on making a diaper cake.

*For extra decor, buy some helium-filled balloons in the same colors and fill the room with the hovering pieces.

I personally find it easier to fan the diapers than to roll them. I made six cakes as centerpieces in less than two hours using this method. Photobucket

StepMom1, It depends on how big you want to make your cake. My cake ended up a pretty good size and I think I used about 70 in all - sizes 2 and 3. Good luck with it! I've made a few of these and they get easier with time. Only took me about 30 - 45 minutes to make this one.

This is great - thanks for the photos. I wish I had rec'd diapers at my shower. I seemed to get a lot of hats and the baby is coming at the end of April!

I too have been seeing these at baby showers for the last few years. But I'm lazy so a gift off the registry will do for me!!!

My sister and I have been doing this for years. They are actually really fun to make so I will never understand why people would run out and buy one already made. In my experience if you have a hard time with the diapers staying folded, NEVER use tape that will mess up the diapers. I use those clear outchless ponytale holders. They work wonders!

What a fantastic centerpiece. If only I thought of this last year when I threw two baby showers...

You can also wrap onesies around the outside of the diaper to make it look like an actual cake. I've ordered cakes from this place when I didn't have time to make one. Both had been beautiful, and they let you "build" it yourself in terms of accessories: www.9monthsinc.com.

I can't believe how popular these have become. We've (myself, mom and sis) have been making these for people for a few years now. I can't belive people actually sell these as well. It's a bit time consuming but it's definetly worth the time because people appreciate it in the end :)

onesies work just as well for this too. My cousin had twins and we knew she was gonna need LOTS of them. So we made her a onesie cake.
