I Need Your Help . . . Ear Protection From Rain?

Rainy days go away! Not only does the wet stuff totally annoy some pets, it can be harmful, too. Check out this message about a three-year-old blue American Pitbull:

We rescued Diva at seven months old, and she had already had her ears clipped. It was a chop job to say the least — the problem now is that she is getting gunk in her ears when we walk, especially in the rain. I am looking for something to protect her ears and not block her hearing.

To see my advice, and offer your own, .

First off, I'd check with a vet to confirm that build up isn't coming from an infection. To keep ears clean, pick up a safe cleanser with Almond or Macadamia nut oils to repel water and soften stubborn wax. Anyone else have any suggestions to make walk time less sticky and less waterlogged?

(Remember if you have questions to be answered, either send me a private message or simply post to the Pet Peeves group — we're all here to help!)

Since you didn't mention that your pup has a problem with being IN the rain, I'll assume that she's ok with it. That said, we just took our pup to the vet for and ear infection, and while we were there, we got a version of "swimmer's ear solution" specifcally formulated for canines, which will help dry her ears out after the fact. Make sure that she doesn't have an ear infection though (coffee ground-like buildup in her ears, itching her ears and/or shaking her head a bunch)

I would definitely see a vet and see if the build up isn't an infection first and see what the vet suggests to keep her ears dry. I can't really suggest anything else. Zena has erect ears but we normally don't have a problem keeping them dry considering how much she hates rain. She refuses to go outside or on a walk even if it's just sprinkling.

I can't help but think this could be avoided by not modifying the poor pup's ears in the first place. You can also consider, if your doggie is not too irritated by things around his ears, using one of those plastic rain-caps you'll often see older women wearing. They can really help!
