We have tried crate training and it wasn't effective at all. He now gets 4 walks a day, at about 5 hour intervals. His potty habits don't seem to be regular though. Is there a way to train him to tell us if he needs to go out? He barks AFTER he's peed. Too late!

I agree with crate training! We crate trained our puppy from the day we got him (at 2mo) and he picked it up VERY quickly. When you are at home, you should take him out as much as possible, so that they learn that outside is good and inside is bad, reward with lots of treats! And if they do go inside, scold then take them right outside. Also make sure the crate isn't too big ( or they may find space in the back to go), and good luck!
