I have an 8 year old cat and am getting a puppy - any tips on introducing the two of them without the cat freaking out?

How I did it with my cat and dog was I put a gate in between two closed off rooms and had my dog on one side and the cat on the other. Make sure the rooms are closed off from other areas as the cat or dog might sometimes try to get away as far from the other as possible once the curiosity state gets over like mine did. If the two linger around at the gate feeling interested about each other, make sure they are both settled down and not practically jumping off the walls, hold either the dog or the cat (doesn't matter), and SLOWLY bring him or her to the other side of the gate (but continue holding them). Keep the two an arms length away just in case some nipping or scratching takes place. If they are both still ok and have no signs of jumping on top of the other, let them come closer to each other little by little but if they get too curious and pass personal boundaries, separate them or else trouble might brew. It might take take a few days or even a couple months if either have an extreme dislike towards the other. Over a course of time, you can let them be in the same room but you must be there with them yourself just to keep watch. Remember not to interact with them too much or else they end up ignoring each other and chase after you instead. Once you feel that they are comfortable around each other enough, you can take the gate away for longer periods until they are fined being with another. Eventually, you should be able to remove it permanently.
