JD Robb: In Death Series

In honor of Reading Is Sexy's grand opening, I'm going to start off with the series that's has been holding me in a chockhold for going on 10 years now.
Nora Roberts, writing as JD Robb in her not so far distant future has captured my attention since my very good friend lend me a copy of the 1st of the series, Naked In Death. That copy started me on my 10 year journey of hunting and gathering mission to find and read every one of the books in the series. Luckily, JD Robb is too kind and releases 2 books a year under this series. I can happily say that I'm a proud owner of all 34 books so far and you'll have to pry them from my cold dead hands before I let them go.
Brief Synopsis:
The In Death Series is a futuristic police procedural by author J.D. Robb centering around NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her fight to bring justice to those brutally murdered in her city. Many might call this series more of a futuristic romantic suspense series, because so much of it revolves around the marriage of Eve to Irish billionaire Roarke. But while there's plenty of romance between our favorite couple, there's also plenty of suspenseful murder mystery. Put that together with some very interesting futuristic world-building, and you get a series that shows up on bestseller lists with every new release.

Laine's past has just caught up with her, though-in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it's up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who's chasing her, and why.

I agree with AJRyan, no where does it mention that the summaries are from InDeat.net. It should

It isn't an actual "article" and it does link to your site.

While I appreciate that this series and JD Robb/Nora Roberts gets some positive publicity from this article, it's disappointing to say the least that you would use resources like the Wiki at indeath.net and not cite that you've used the source. You have even directly copied all of the book summaries from indeath.net's Wiki, and used photos which link to there (taking up the site's bandwidth). As the owner of that site, I would respectfully ask that the article either give credit to the source that you took the material from. It seems only fair.

I adore the In Death series....googling for a complete listing led me here. I wasn't sure if the whole world knows about this or not but as it has been the joy of my *reading life*, I thought I'd share just in case not: www.paperbackswap.com . Oh maaaan this is a reader's Heaven! Books, books and more books, all the books you want, any books you want, you can't even imagine. Hard cover, soft cover, audio, non-fiction, fiction, Harlequins, reference, they have it all. Someone out there has what you want and it's listed right there. All it costs you is a point a book and all a point costs is $2-$3.00 in Media Mail postage when someone has asked for a book from your library...less if they want more than one of yours. And you can buy and print your postage right from the site! I much prefer to read hardcover books so pretty much mostly would buy whatever Borders had marked down...and then never knew what to do with all the read books except donate to the library. Not anymore! Heaven. I have never gotten a bad or grungy book (it's actually made ME take better care ha-ha), you can request non-smoking, etc. Honestly, there is not one negative. People write reviews so you can get a take on books before you request, you can search on genres, authors, etc.. Oh and, and...as someone said earlier, they read alot and sometimes can't remember what they've read? Get this. PBS keeps an archive of all your transactions! That you can even sort on! Sorry. I must sound like a freak but as a commuter who reads about 1-2 books a week, PBS has been a life-saver. Apparently, they've had all kinds of press; don't know how I missed it but I am glad I found them. Go take a look around at the site. I know you will be very glad you did. Janie

I just finished Kindred in Death. Sooooo good! It's a bit more graphic than the other books, but I really enjoyed it.

Hey have just finished reading Memory in Death and loved it . Was attracted by the name Roarke as this is the name of the detective in my novels ironically but spelt Rourke !! Thanks for the list as i had no idea what order they came in , so now i can go back and devour them all in order 8) I was surprised by the futuristic elements as i didn't read that much into the back cover and it wasn't mentioned in the synopsis ,I didn't realise till half way through haha! It was tasteful and subtle so it works for me ! I am intrigued for what this series has to offer as Trixie says this is a least favourite so excited in knowledge the rest must be even better! Also am thrilled there's a few of em to keep me going like Modus said . I read all the time about 2 books a week ! My favourites of late have been this one , Hide by Lisa Granger , All Karin Slaughters especially the Will Trent books , Messiah By Boris Starling and Twisted by Jonathan Kellermen . Although i probably read to much and have to keep track in an address book of what I've read so i don't borrow them again !Most books tend to merge in the mass of my mind but those are the ones that stuck out this year , just to put that out there if anyone was interested in any suggestions! Cheers all

Myst - Origin & Born in Death are probably my favorites. It's so hard to choose! Born is just so good because of the way the plot was laid out. I didn't see the connections the first time I read it. Origin, I agree, was so unique. I also really liked Imitation in Death. I've always had a weird fascination with serial killers so that was interesting. I zoomed through Midnight in Death. It was so short, but I loved the story. If I had to pick my least favorite, I'd say Loyalty or Memory. Loyalty just hit a little too close to home & I just didn't like Memory. I agree with you, too, on Salvation in Death. The dead guy was so unsympathetic. That's kind of the beauty of the books, though. Even though the dead person may not be a sympathetic character, Eve still stands for them. Kastarte - You'll love them. If you don't get into the first, keep going. It took me to the third to really fall in love with them. I'm not much for fantasy and you have to suspend disbelief a little as the books are set in the future. By the time I read the third one, though, I was hooked.

This series is very popular at the library I work in. I have never checked them out before but I will now. :)

Oh, yes, I definitely love to use the library! I was saying that if you read a book and love it and the author has only ever written one or two, it's a bummer because then once you finish it, it's done. I like when an author is prolific so if you like one book, there's plenty more where that came from!
CaterpillarGirl CaterpillarGirl
Modus, At my library you can request "inter library loans" on a certain book and they will call around to libraries in state and out of state for you and find you the book. the only catch is that you have to agree to pay full price if its damaged, which is pretty normal. I do it all the time. I get books from (and i am in florida) Alabama, Georgia, Louisana. its awesome.
Modus Vivendi Modus Vivendi
I love it when you find an author you like and they've written a ton of books. It's such a bummer when there's only a handful or even only one!
Myst Myst
Trixie you don't understand how much I love Born and Origin in death. Born because you know it's actually happening now and Origin because it's such as freaking unique idea. What's your favorite/least in the series? Mine. Naked In Death. My least favorite so far is Salvation In Death. I hated the dead guy and I just couldn't feel sorry for his death.

Roark? As in Howard?

Myst - I agree with you about watching the characters grow. I adore Peabody & McNab, Mavis & Leonardo. Seeing how their "lives" have progressed has been such a neat thing. I just finished Born in Death for the second time. I enjoyed that book so much.
CaterpillarGirl CaterpillarGirl
gotcha, I am going to the library tonight and will pick the first one up. I have seen them, of course, but was hesitant to pick them up.

CG - IMHO, they're very well written. Some of the books have twists and turns that make the moment when the mystery is revealed a big surprise. They're set in the future, so all of the changes in technology etc that Robb/Roberts writes about are really interesting to think about. The characters have gotten, cheesily enough, to be like old friends to me.
Myst Myst
CG, the books are really well written and you can really identify with the books. Personally I love Eve Dallas and Roarke because they're both very complex characters and it's fun watching them grow as people, especially Eve. I've yet to meet a person who haven't love this series.
Myst Myst
you're welcome Trixie. They're released some of the mini-novels as one book called Three In Death. That one has: Interlude In Death, Midnight In Death, and Haunted in Death. Also remember to pick out Remember When. which is a joint Nora Roberts/JD Robb. Funnily enough I can't stand her books as Nora Roberts but devour the In Death series And a lot of "my" copies came from the paperback edition at the library that I just never returned. Oh Walmart sells them pretty dirt cheap and always have a copy on hand.
CaterpillarGirl CaterpillarGirl
Question: I tend to steer clear of a book with so many in the series. Is it just silly fun? are they well written?
Trixie6 Trixie6
Thanks for the invitation, Myst! I love this series. They're such good, fun mysteries. We just moved and our new library has so many more of the titles than our old one did. I was positively tickled to find a few that I hadn't read and grinned like a nut when I checked them out. :-P Thanks for listing them in order, Myst. I've started on my quest to own all of the books in the series & having a list of them will be handy.
Myst Myst
you're welcome kiki. I must confess to reading a lot of the books out of order though, but it's surprisingly easy to do so. As long as you read the 1st 5 books in order, you'll get pretty caught up easily and learn all of the major characters and recurring ones, even if you don't read them in order
kikidawn kikidawn
Those sound awesome. I'll definitely check them out when I have the extra time. Thanks for putting all the titles in order ;) I have a thing for having all the titles in order and listed before I start reading a series.
