Mama's Little Power Ranger/Turtle "Linja"

My son is totally obsessed with Power Rangers and The Turtle "Linjas" (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). He runs around the house doing fighting poses and spin kicks & flips while yelling "HYAH!" It's cute, but it's opened up this whole debate between my husband and I over whether or not he's ready to take martial arts lessons. My husband feels if he's interested it will be fun and also help him with discipline, honor, respect, and patience. I say he's 3 (4 in October) and will spend more time jumping around like Tigger than actually learning something so is not something he is ready for....any advice?

My oldest started martial arts when he was four through a program at his daycare, they did it twice a week at the end of the day. It was great! There are many schools that have special programs for children under six, though true lessons only start at 6. The special programs focus on discipline, behavior modification and respect. Just check out your local dojo's and see what they offer.

Mine do it too, it is cute. Most of the places around here will not take them until they are 5-6, because the kids aren't disciplined enough (not that they don't behave but they're not quite old enough to grasp and understand when/when not to use it or memorize the routines). Jake is almost 6, and he took few classes right after he turned 5. He didn't have the attention span for it then, but we're going to try again in a couple of months after his 6th birthday. Good luck!

I agree. At the very least it will help get him used to other grown-ups telling him what to do & he'll get to jump around w/ other little ones!

I have a co-worker who has a twin of your son! It's completely normal for a 3 year old boy to run around doing that. It's actually really cute. :) I wouldn't worry to much about him not learning other things that may seem more important to you. Martial Arts can also be a springboard for other important lessons in life. :NINJA:
