Men's style question..help me out here!

Not long ago, when I had posted about a revamped charity shop table and chairs on CasaSugar, what I did not mention was my boyfriend, surprisingly, picked up a nifty chocolate Fedora and decided out of the blue to buy it.

Now to explain his normal style in one word is..uh....black.

He is tall, and lean, and pale and has a definite "young Christopher Walken" thing going on...and wears glasses. If he had his way he would live in Iron Maiden t-shirts and his dad's old leather jacket (which is awesome, admittedly, and beautifully worn-out)...but he has this ..hat now, by his own choice, and I was surprised and impressed with his buying it because it was cool, different and surprisingly enthusiastic. (He's Finnish, trust me, this qualifies as utter and complete spontaneity!!) Laughing out loud

Now, he has asked me to help him get some looks together...I want to help him find ways to wear it that he is comfortable with..encourage him without beating him over the head with fashion. He is not the kind of guy who is going to go nuts for a lot of looks, and I don't want to change him...I just want to help him find looks that connect his affection for this hat into something that allows him to wear it more often. Facially, he totally pulls it off (he has the long, lean thing going for him), but how to use it without turning him into an Indiana Jones costume?

He's a very easygoing, mellow person with an utterly unhurried attitude about clothes...even getting him to buy a new shirt is an exercise in patience. Its not that he dislikes the idea..its more that he says "oh....I'll do it later"....and calmly wanders over to the console games. Laughing out loud

So...here is the hat...I think he could work this with his dad's old bomber jacket (even in black) and a simple white tee...somehow. But while I feel fine dressing myself, dressing a 6-foot tall Finnish dude with an impressive collection of heavy metal t-shirts is another matter entirely.

My only rules: avoid rolled up sleeves, suspenders, anything too "artful dodgerish" aka Pete Doughtery...its SO not him to dress like that.

Your thoughts please!! And thanks from me, and "kiitos" from him in advance!

Here's a shot of a brown fedora, as a starting point. His has a subtly-patterned paisley band, which may or may not have to go....but basically the hat is like this one:

Your ideas welcomed!

Dear Rabidmoon I know this sounds completely crazy, but that is what mom and I used to do: take off a day and of course, he too, go on a normal weekday and let him try ALL which is there... So you will find out, what is GREAT on him and what is not so great. You will have fun, believe me. I have done this with my nephew and my niece and now they know THEIR style... Believe me, they never thought that colors which they never dreamed of would make such a good face, skin, look... HAVE FUN!!!

Hehe! Hey hartsfull. :) You know, it's funny you mention the black band. I suggested to him JUST TODAY we maybe change the band so that he can tie the brown into black looks more easily...the paisley is not really "him". :P The thing is, black and brown can be so chic even in a casual setting, so I think he could use that look well. One look I suggested to him was a v-neck white tee under a nice, but unbuttoned cotton shirt...I have seen Johnny Depp along with random artists/musicians combine those elements nicely. He was open to that one for sure, so we've got one look down anyway! I do think ultimately a grey or black hat would be great for him..but before he invests in another hat, its good to see if he is serious about wearing this one! (Of the two, I personally lean towards grey actually, with his blonde hair I think it could be really nice and less formal/harsh than a black one..he looks great in grey). As for photos...well once we get him into the look, we'll see...he is a pretty unassuming fellow and usually tolerates my photo requests. :)

I think it's awesome that he has asked you to help him. That definately takes the any worries of changing him away-not that you gave any impression of worry, but just so you know, the fact that he asked takes care of that. Anyway, just a white t-shirt and nicely faded gently used jeans sounds would be nice. Starting with that would be very slow maybe for him. Hopefully he doesn't feel to different from his usual black. Maybe if he had a black t-shirt I'd look for a black band to go around the fedora. Otherwise for my husband when there is something I want him to wear I just buy. If he has it in the closet he'll wear it. He was completely wranglers, and canvas shirts from cabelas ugh! Or, for dress up those bright colored western shirts! I don't mind the wranglers but those shirts had to go. :)

Mens style can be tough...but a great leather jacket is a fabulous place to start. This hat, however would probably look better on YOU. A good worn in pair of Calvin Klein jeans and a simple tee would work... just save the hat for a day when you feel like adopting that play-on-masculine-fashion-look- the hat looks a little too feminine to be paired with a worn in leather jacket.

Wow! My hat's off to him for stepping out of his normal comfort zone. I'm not super-up on men's fashion but I can easily see this hat being worn as you described with his dad's leather jacket and a white tee. I think a classic pair of jeans and a pair of boots would finish that off nicely and he wouldn't look like he was palying dress up either. If he's feeling daring he might even try it with a polo [maybe layered with a tee] and a pair of madras pants. Again with the boots. I also don't see anything wrong with him hooking it up with the leather jacket, a heavy metal tee and a pair of jeans. That would be his own look and he might be most comfortable in it. Anyway - this is my 2 cents on it. It would be great if you shared photos of him in his final look!
