Does Working Out Ever Make You Too Tired?

I love a good morning workout, especially because it gives me tons of energy to fuel the rest of my day: my body warms up, my blood starts flowing, and my endorphins get kicked into overdrive. Sometimes my workouts are so energizing that I even forgo my morning cup of coffee. For its latest issue, Good Housekeeping chats with Michelle Obama, and the First Lady revealed that she went a little overboard with her morning workout:

"I can start the day pretty tired. Today, for instance, I woke up extra early, did a vicious workout. I mean, killer! Lots of cardio. So I was really tired . . . "

Luckily the people she surrounds herself with were all she needed to perk right up and get on with her day.

Since I normally feel pretty refreshed after my everyday workouts, I'm wondering if any of you have ever experienced what the First Lady has. Tell me . . .

I always am tired after a workout harder than a 5k on the treadmill, evening workouts are best for me

good timing with this post, Fit! i tend to workout in the afternoons, once i am home from work, but that's only because as a mother of one and holding down a full time job it's the only pocket of time i can manage. but i've found it's the best time as it perks me up for the evening routine (chores, dinner, etc) and helps me sleep well and feel great in the morning! only thing is i might have overdone it and have found my energy levels too low and my body feels just too tired to workout...:(

It really depends on what type of workout I did. If I do HIIT or any high intensity cardio I feel refreshed and feel I have extra energy throughout the day. If I lift weights I usually feel completely spent afterwards. That is why I do my 2 longer and heavier days of weights on the weekend and only do 1 during the week. My mind isn't tired so I have no desire to sleep but my body wants to rest and relax after!

I get the usual cortisol rush after a high intensity workout. But sometimes when the workout is much more intense than normal, I crash a few hours later.

Working out gives me a huge energy jolt, so I always work out in the morning. Later on in the day, when I'm ready for bed, the effect of the exercise kicks in and I go to sleep relaxed and tired. If I work out at night, I get really buzzed and can't fall asleep very easily.

I work out at 5:30 every morning. I do a vigorous 55 minute workout (either cardio or strength, depending on the day), but it never makes me tired. It gives me a boost. If I worked out before bed, I'd never go to sleep!

Yes but my extreme fatigue after exercising is due to my IBD which also causes extreme abdominal pain when I vigorously exercise and chronic Iron/Zinc Deficient Anemia and just not being able to gain any ground on the nutrients that I lose from working out or just plain living. I actually have had to severely cut back to darn near stop all physical activity at least until doctors pinpoint the exact problem area in both my small & large intestines and decide on a course of treatment. It makes me feel crappy and I worry that all the weight I lost I will regain and stamina I had gained I will lose.

Change sometimes to all the time. I'm ALWAYS tired after working out. I sometimes nap after, or work out right before bed because of how tired it makes me.

I workout at 5:30 in the morning and it has never made me tired before. However, recently I have had a few times that I was tired afterwards... but I am in grad school AND I will admit that I sometimes am so busy that I forget to eat. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. And yes, I know how ditzy that sounds..... but my days have been so hectic lately.

There are actually studies on this, some people do get tired and it doesn't always mean there is a problem. I am usually ready for a nap or bed after so I prefer to work out at night or later in the day. I think it is just so incredibly relaxing for me that I can't help feeling tired! I don't think it has anything to do with lack of sleep for me, I get plenty.

Some days a workout makes me feel more energized all day, today, all I want to do is take a nap. Probably haven't been getting enough sleep!!

Mentally, I'm always much more alert post workout - I feel like I get a lot more done. Physically I'm more...I wouldn't call it tired, but I can tell that I worked out. Maybe more aware of the muscles I worked. I notice this much more on weight training days than straight up running days, some on both days.

I started experiencing this recently. Was weird because it never happened to me before. Then, bingo. It made all the sense in the world. I found out I am pregnant.

Jereldan - This time three years ago, I couldn't even run a 5k without walking. You'll get there ;) stellaRuby - I also feel relaxed after working out. That's a better description than "tired." On days when I don't workout, I feel somewhate wired (which is weird because I don't drink caffeine, but I just have SO much energy) and it's difficult for me to fall asleep. I guess the endorphins make some people feel good in an energized sort of way and others in a peaceful, calm sort of way.

This happens to me sometimes, usually after an especially tough run and almost always after Bikram.

I workout super early as well however I always make sure get enough sleep and eat well. I never fell tired after my workouts - quite the opposite,I always feel incredibly energized.Adequate sleep is super important - lack of sleep is one of the main reasons people feel tired after their workouts.

First, why do these magazines photoshop the crap out of their photos? It looks awful! Michelle looks like a Madame Tussaud wax figure on that cover. My husband claims that he gets dead tired after a workout. I, on the other hand, usually have an energy boost. But, if I don't eat something shortly after, I can crash a little.

I was just talking to my husband about this. I also feel tired after working out. I love to work out at night because I am uber relaxed and ready for bed. When I workout during the day I am also a little out of it for the rest of the day.

I agree with sass, i'm usually up and at 'em after a workout, but if I am sleep deprived or haven't eaten enough during the day I just could pass out after a hard run.

It's happened to me before, but it's usually a sign that something's wrong. Either I'm not getting enough sleep, not eating enough (or properly) or am overtraining and need to ease back on the workouts for a bit. When everything is in balance and I fuel up properly before and immediately after I feel awesome -- even after a brutal workout.

Chloe Bella, I would just like to get to the point where I could run 5 miles w/o stopping!
chloe-bella chloe-bella 4 years 23 weeks
Oh, and I especially feel this way any time I run 15 miles or more. Just totally exhausted!
chloe-bella chloe-bella 4 years 23 weeks
Yes, I thought I was the only one who felt that way! I feel energized while I'm working out, but by the time I shower and get dressed, my post-workout buzz has worn off and I'm tired. On days when I don't workout in the morning, I have a ton of energy during the day. This is one reason I like working out before bed - I fall asleep right away.
