Mental Motivation


If you were inspired by the Musical Motivation post found on the Running Nina OnSugar blog, here's a follow-up about mental motivation.

Recently I posted about being motivated by music, but music isn’t what gets me out of bed and into the gym.

A few years ago if you asked why I worked out my answer would be "To lose weight and look good." My motivation revolved around not being fat and wanting to be skinny, beautiful, and confident. And of course, so I could meet somebody, fall in love, and get married . . . because that wouldn’t happen if I was 'fat.'  Being 5'6" and roughly 175 pounds I wasn’t fat but I wasn’t skinny, I was 'chunky' I suppose. Being 19 I didn’t care about my health, I cared about my looks.

Once I turned 20 I started to really kick things into gear. I started working out with a trainer [yay gym employee discount!] and started to kick up the cardio a bit. It took a while but I was down to the 155 range by the time my 21st birthday came around and I celebrated the New Year in a dress that was too tight at one point, and I had to pull it up several times because it was too big. March 2009 I took a trip to South Beach with my best friend and was 152 pounds. While it was the lowest weight I had ever been, being on the beach in a bikini next to my size 2 best friend didn’t make me feel any better.  [March 2009 was also when I met my boyfriend, who told me "You are truly beautiful" a few nights after our first date. We are still together.]

Mix getting incredibly sick, being put on bed rest, and starting birth control, my weight went up . . . fast. I had to ease into working out again slow . . . very slow. Even 10 minutes of yoga would have me huffing and puffing. I didn’t run for close to 6 months, barely worked out. I was back to where I started . . . and then some.

Great post! I agree with you that BMI is NOT an accurate way to measure obesity/overweight/norm./underweight. When I trained for a marathon I was considered "overweight" by the BMI standard when I wore a size 2-4 jeans so I wouldn't worry about it :). As long as you feel great in your own skin then everything is dandy! Jess

At 5'6 and 175lbs, your BMI was almost 29. Obese is 30 or greater. So yeah, you weren't really "chunky," you were nearly obese. Just saying.
