Oscar Dresses

Some of these are really bad and others are OK in my opinion.

I spend lots of time looking at bad ensembles and thinking that a lot of women we find dressed atrociously must have a reasonable number of people telling them how fabulous it looks on them first. Yes we can say that it is because people close to them are afraid to say otherwise, but sometimes it's just the way it strikes us at the time. I keep thinking that the designs are often striking or unusual or simply an effort to step away from the norm, but one wonders what the designers were thinking. I always recall the joke about how women should have designers who actually LIKE women designing their clothes. As time goes on one wonders. While I would never wear most of them, even some of the good ones simply because I doubt my personality could carry it off, I do think of different people in these dresses and wonder if another person might make a difference. For example I find that Kim Basinger's dress was exquisite... as long as one was in fantasy land and never left the plantation. Lastly, I cringe to think of some of the formals I wore when I was young and how my friends and I thought things looked so wonderful on each of us. Maybe we enjoy lying to each other, like in a children's game, but it seems clear that when going outside our comfort zone, most of our choices are like a crap shoot...in both senses of the term.

Bjork was nominated for best original song that year for Dancer in the Dark, and I just thought "woah" when I saw that swan dress. Then Winona Ryder got up and did the introduction for her, saying what a fan she was personally, and she was Icelandic. When Bjork sang she was really incredible. I tried more of her music, but it wasn't for me.

I remember all of them too! Celine's outfit was dreadful but I'd have to say Whoppi's dress was the worst monstrosity! Runners up would also be Demi, Kim Basinger and Geena Davis.

What's scary is, I remember most of those dresses. I've clearly been watching a while. I think Celine Dion's backwards suit was actually worse than the swan. Both scary, but the suit is scarier.
