Slow Cooker Easiest-Ever Paella

Personally, I think that paella is one of the best dishes around, even though it's something that I don't often make. It's great because of the flavors in it and the fact that whether you love chicken, sausage, or shimp, there's something in this dish for you!

For those of you unfamiliar with the dish, it's a staple in Spain and my first introduction was indeed in a high school Spanish class. I've been in love ever since and if you haven't had it before, I definitely suggest you try it! And since this does look like an easy recipe, maybe I'll be having one of my favorite dishes more often!

Easiest Ever Paella
Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Slow Cooker Recipes

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Makes about 6 servings.

8 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, cut into 1 inch pieces
8 ounces fully cooked andouille sausage, cut into 1 inch pieces
2 can (14 ounces each) reduced sodium chicken broth
1 can (14.5 ounce) no salt added diced tomatoes
2 packages (5.6 ounces each) Spanish rice mix
1 cup frozen loose-pack petite peas
1/2 cup frozen chopped onion
1 cup frozen cooked shrimp, thawed

Directions

1. In a 4 quart slow cooker, stir together chicken, sausage, chicken broth, undrained tomatoes, rice mix, peas, and onion until thoroughly combined.

2. Cover and cook on HIGH for 2 hours. Stir in shrimp. Cover; cook for 20 to 30 minutes or until shrimp is heated through.

I tried this. It's more like a mix of jambalaya and paella rather than a straight paella. The ingredients were good, but I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND the cooking method. As stated above, this was nowhere near done after cooking in a slow cooker for 2 hours. Much better method is to put the ingredients above (I also mixed in some red&green bell peppers, and included yellow rice with some extra broth) in a regular pot and slow boil over medium-high heat for about 25 minutes, add shrimp and turn to low temp for another 10-15 minutes. Came out great. I also have to agree that it's a little distasteful to add a stock photo of paella to a recipe that has little resemblance to the actual dish.

I had the same problem as the person above. 2 hours didn't even put a dent in the rice. I wound up dumping the whole thing into a pot and cooking it on the stove, covered, for about 15 minutes and it came out very nicely!

I tried this recipe today. I cooked the rice for ages yet I still had individual bits of rice that just weren't cooked. the rest ended up going to mush as I thought it needed more liquid. maybe rice isn't made for a slow cooker? Or I'm not....

Gee, could you be any more abrupt, Hannah? No, it doesn't look like the original recipe. But that's really no reason to be rude.

How is this picture even CLOSE to the actually recipe? You've got, 1. chicken drumsticks instead of 1- inch pieces 2. green peppers, where's that in the recipe? 3. a cast iron skillet, no slow-cooker. Misleading much??

I'm not sure that I have saffron at home - it's really not something that I make. But I'm hoping to, so I'll have to pick some up!

i absoultely LOVE paella...and it is easy to make and a whole meal in one dish...you've got your rice, meats, veges everything! I noticed that your recipe doen't have saffron in it...saffron is the heart of a good paella...try it with a pinch of saffron once and you'll never go without it again!
