Toddler leashes: Tasteless or Trendy?

I was at the mall recently with my 3 year old, when we saw a little girl about his age wearing one of these harnesses and her mother holding the leash (is there another word?). My son was asking a bunch of questions as to what he saw and why the little girl needed to be on it. I just told him that his Mommy wants to keep the little girl safe.
I've never used one, and never plan on using one of these. I don't think they're too popular, since I don't see them that often.

What do you feel about these? Have you ever used one with your child?

I used a harness one for my youngest son to save him from being run over ( he was one to just take off, and he was/is FAST!) and I wish I would have had one in '96 when my oldest son was a toddler, he was even MORE fearless! I have yet to use one for Grace though (now 2). Not that I wouldn't if I saw the need to.

I think these are safer than the wrist ones, which I don't even think are sold anymore.

Yeah, I agree the wrist ones are fine actually. I think the harness ones in this picture just make me think of a dog.

I don't have any problem with them.. though the ones that just attach to a wrist look a little nicer. I advised my boss to get last week.. she had to hussle a newborn and a hyperactive toddler through an airport and was worried about him running off and getting lost. Would definitely take care of the problem.

First of all, as I read the title to this post, I thought it said Toddler Lashes... as in fake eyelashes for little girls, so I was prepared to go OFF on that idea. As for the Leashes, I agree with Sofi, I thought they were appalling until I had a kid myself. Although I've never used one myself, or really had the need to, I sure have wanted to give one as a gift to someone for their unruly child who I will let them remain nameless. ;)

I think it's a matter of safety. If your child is fast, and would want to keep them close I think it's fine.

Well, before I had children I thought that this was a horrible idea- to put your child on a leash like a dog or something. After becoming a parent, I can relate to those who need to use one. It really is for the child's safety. I have never used one but won't judge a parent who does.

I have seen these but never actually used the harness. I had one for my oldest that was more wrist to wrist so he can walk around and explore but not wander off to far. We used it when going on walks in the park, and I really liked it alot.

im not mum but i used to have one but not like this. that really doesnt make sense. well anyway mine didnt make me look like a dog!
