The Tourist: A Trip That Goes Off the Rails

To say there's been much anticipation for The Tourist — the thriller/romance starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp — is putting it mildly. When you have two actors of this caliber as love interests, you're bound to generate buzz. Unfortunately, star power isn't enough to save this disappointing film.

Adapted from the French film Anthony Zimmer, the story centers around Elise (Jolie), a woman caught in a cat-and-mouse game with authorities (led by Paul Bettany) after her lover Alexander steals billions from his mob boss. Alexander has undergone plastic surgery while on the lam, so the police no longer know what he looks like. To aide their search, they trail Elise in the hopes that she'll lead them to him. Elise is all too aware that she's being followed, so to get them off Alexander's scent, she strikes up conversation with a bumbling American named Frank (Depp), convincing her onlookers that he's the man they seek.

For more of my thoughts on the film, just

As the film is so eager to point out, Frank is a quirky fellow. He smokes electric cigarettes and mispronounces the Italian language so that "Buon Giorno" sounds more like "Bon Jovi." In a word, he's clueless, but once Frank has gangster minions after him, he's jumping from roofs in his pajamas and knocking men off boats. This from a guy who's just a math teacher?! But that's only the tip of the iceberg of implausible scenarios. As the story builds toward its climax (it's a slow, slow build, I might add), it only becomes more absurd.

Like Alexander's confusing identity, the movie seems similarly muddled about its genre. Is it a thriller? A comedy? A love story? It tries to touch on all three, never devoting enough time to establish more laughs or build on the sparks between its stars. It's a shame, because Depp and Jolie could have chemistry with a brick wall. Unfortunately, their relationship is so contrived that the romantic moments are laughable.

Fans of Jolie or Depp may still enjoy watching their beloved actors on the big screen. Even though their partnership isn't noteworthy, Jolie looks gorgeous with a to-die-for wardrobe, and Depp delivers a few awkwardly funny lines as Frank. It's just too bad that they don't deliver much more than eye candy.

Love it! I love to see all of Angelina's movies because of her stage presence. Hey! I'd rather see AJ's movies than that MANFACE ex wife of Brad's. I enjoyed the movie even though it was a little bit slow, but the gorgeous sceneries and some of Depp's lines would crack me up; especially with the faces that he would make. But, all in all, the tourist movie was a beautiful movie to watch, and I will most definitely buy it when it comes out. Oh! btw, I never go to see the movies that the manfacie makes, she is ugly on the big screen, old & haggard looking, and her acting is the worse, so I will never waste my money on any of the ex's stupid and boring movies. Every movie that manface makes, she acts the same in it, and it always seems like your watching TV; instead of a good movie on the big screen. Sorry, but the ManFace is just a super bad actress. Sincerely!

The Bounty Hunter & Knight & Day not only brough in the $$$$$$, but they were much more successful than this horrible movie. I knew when it was announced that Depp & The old has-been were going to make a movie that it would be a failure, and it tanked worse than I thought. Depp needs to be careful who he shares the screen with from now on. He needs respected astors in his films. He will survive this, but Jolie's day's are numbered!

Just saw it and enjoyed it immensely. Reminded me of those old Cary Grant movies where I might add there was a combination of thriller, comedy and love story. People always say that's what they want (those old-fashioned movies without blood and guts, gratuitous sex or violence), well, here it is . . . please go see it!

I can think of worse ways to spend a few hours than watching Angie and Johnny. It wasn't meant to be Shakespeare - just a good time. Critics - lighten up. Even stars of this caliber like to make fun movies every now and then. I'll go see it just because the critics are usually way off base pretending to know what's good and what's not. Tow hours of these two? The eye candy alone makes it worth the time!

It cannot possibly be as painful as watching Knight & Day and The Bounty Hunter.. so I am going to give it a try. I am desperate for a hitchcock style throwback movie. And I love Depp. There has to be worse ways to waste an hour or so then staring at Jolie and Depp and Venice. Yeah.. I'm still in.

It's weird, but I enjoy Jolie's performances more when it's not a romantic movie. I was not a fan of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, for example, but I loved her in Girl, Interrupted and Changeling

I usually enjoy their movies but this movie just doesn't interest me. I was going to see it if it got good reviews but since most people seem to dislike it I think I'll wait till it is out on netflixs.

These movies always disappoint, it's like there is only so much star power and hype you can put in a movie, and the moment you overdo it, you end up with a mess.
