Trader Joe's Nourish Shampoo

I love love love this product. Purchased on a whim as I waited in those interminably long Saturday morning lines at Trader Joe's, this is the most amazing shampoo I have ever used, bar none. If Trader Joe's ever goes out of business, I will stock pile this item before they do.

I listed the ingredients below, as you can see, most of the ingredients are natural and/or organic. AND, it comes with a GREAT price tag: I think this cost betwen $2 and $3. If you don't have a Treader Joe's supermarket near you, I'm sure you could order this on-line.

I have dry and curly (but sexy!) hair and only wash it every 2 or 3 days. This products thoroughly cleans any styling products out of my hair, while leaving my scalp well hydrated. Some people may find that this product leaves their scalp oily, but I think of it as just not stripping my hair of its natural oils. I have not tried the conditioner yet, but plan to get it on my next trip there; I'll let you know how it works soon!

It was brought to my attention by Sheilamamo (below in the comments) that this product contains parabens, which I now know to be toxic. I sent this letter to Trader Joe's via their website:
"I love your nourish spa shampoo because it removes styling product build up and does not strip my hair of its natural oils. I recently recommended your nourish spa shampoo on a beauty product rating website, and it was brought to my attention that it contains parabens, a toxic chemical preservative that mimics estrogen in the body. Parabens are believed to cause breast cancer.It shocks me that such an oversight could be made; Trader Joe's seems very dedicated to the health and well being of its shoppers. Are there any plans to remove parabens from this product, or do you have a product that has a 100% natural plant based formula? Please let me know, I look forward to forwarding this information to my friends on this beauty product rating website."

Hello Ladies, thanks for your posts on Nourish S P A Shampoo and Conditioner. I bought these two from Trader Joe's apart from Tea Tree Tingle to try these products. I went online to check on the ingredients and OMG, there are 2 names which I oppose using: MethylPARABEN and PropylPARABEN. I just had my hair washed using these products. I applied parabens on my hair and scalp. Terrible. The bottles clearly stated it does NOT contain LAUREL/LAURETH SULFATES, but why add Parabens to this products? Reason is just to prolong shelf life. The company wanted to keep their products fresher longer when sitting in their warehouse and then distributes to stores shelves. I don't care for shelf life. I think if the company/stores know how much they are selling their products, then they should make and distribute so many bottles at a time, not all at once. I'm open for anyone to correct me if I posted this incorrect. But I know I am not incorrect on what the parabens/chemical were used for in this products and many other products. Companies who uses parabens WILL go out of business if they don't omit parabens from their products. So ladies, do research and decide whats best for your sake and others. Customers have the right to choose. I'll be checking into Alaffia plus more that was listed earlier by shefre. Freedom is speaking out.

Try Griffin Remedy's line of shampoo and conditioners. They are paraben-free and have natural ingredients. I have naturally wavy/curly hair that gets kind of dry and frizzy. Their restorative line is so fantastic on my hair. I looked at the ingredients and coconut oils are the main ingredients. The shampoo lathers great and the conditioner gets all the tangles out and leaves my hair feeling soft. Their website is: www.griffinremedy.com

I realise this was posted months ago, but as maker of gentle, natural products, I have to comment on Sheilamamo's observations. I agree wholeheartedly that parabens is an awful preservative, endocrine disruptor, estrogen mimicker, but any product containing water needs preserving, and effective broad-spectrum preservatives do not exist in nature, though combinations can be created using things such as neem oil, aspen bark extract, elderberry extract, leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, etc. in products that use less water and more of other diluents such as aloe vera juice. My biggest critique, though, is the comment on citric acid. ANY acid, even vinegar, in large concentrations is a skin irritant and sensitizer. This includes natural acids common in organic skincare such as salicylic acid (even from natural sources, such as willow bark extract and strawberries) and benzoic acid. Citric acid is there, usually at around 1% or less by weight, actually to make the shampoo less harsh by balancing the pH and bind to the minerals in hard water to make the shampoo clean better. Natural soaps, rather than chemical surfactants, are a result of reacting fats (good formulations use vegetable oils/butters) to a caustic (lye in the case of hard soaps, potassium hydroxide in the case of liquid soaps) to extract the fatty acids. The natural pH of the resulting soap is around 9-10, MUCH higher than the pH of hair or skin. Yes, superfatting is done to moisturize, but the high alkalinity can still irritate the skin. In shampoo, citric acid is used to bring the pH back down to around 5.5 in order not to overdry the scalp or leave the hair brittle and tangled. The TINY amount of citric acid added helps smooth the hair follicle and bring out shine, much like apple cider vinegar as a rinse does. It does NOT irritate or sensitize the scalp in such low concentrations.

Oh yes, and I wash my hair minimum every two days and maximum every six days, the average is three or four days. It all depends on how much I sweat, how nice I need to look and how much time I have. Everyday washing dries it out. I soak it in a moisture conditioner every time I wash, but I read the label on my conditioner of choice, and it contains parabens too! I've tried soaking it in olive oil a couple times, and was pleased with the results. Maybe I'll use olive oil until I find something nontoxic.

I live in Cleveland, OH, USA. I will look into those brands, though I have been strongly considering making my own all natural/organic beauty products. Thanks for the tip on parabens. I know all the toxic food ingredients, but the beauty product ingredients are something I'm just beginning to get into. I sent a comment to Trader Joe's via their website, I posted it and will post their response once I receive it.

Here are a few that I would look into. "Just Natural Organic Haircare", "Alaffia", "Earth Essence" and "Keys". I have heard good things about them all and I personally use Alaffia. Natural cleansers are a little different in that they don't sudz like we're used to but that is irrelevant in our hair being cleansed. I think it's a personal thing and makes us feel like it's more clean. I do not wash my hair daily, only once a week. I have been told I have the healthiest hair any hairdresser has ever worked with! I did ask one of my retailers yesterday who is a hair expert how to remove any build up that isn't washed away by the common harsh chemicals in most shampoos and she said that apple cider vinegar is a great treatment plus it doesn't mess with pH factors. last note on cost. I cannot get away from having to pay a little more for a safe shampoo but I cannot compromise my health for cost because in the end, bad health cost more. If your not washing your hair everyday, natural products can actually be more cost-effective than their toxic counterparts. Hope that helps.

Hello Betty doll, I totally get the budget thing. First of all, how often are you washing your hair and secondly where do you live? That will help in recommending a product.

I am always saddened when I see someone think they are buying a great product and it is still falling short. Betty babe, I hate to see you think this is a good product. I am glad you listed the ingredients and I want to comment on them. Citric acid is a major skin irritant, even at low levels and it is also know to have respiratory, brain and nervous system effects. Most of us wash our hair almost daily so this only works to sensitize the skin of your scalp among other potential side effects. The parabens go without saying. They have been linked over and over to breast cancer because they mimic estrogen, causing increased levels. Parabens are one chemical those of us who are advocating for legislative change are asking to be banned in the US because of the dangers. What I tell people when I speak is that NOT EVEN A LITTLE TOXIC IS GOOD. Please for the sake of self love and those of us who don't know you but are concerned for you, stick with only 100% plant based products. You cannot lose for protecting your own health babe!
