Turn Steel Cut Oats Into Quick Cook Oats


The importance of eating a healthy breakfast everyday is pretty well known in these parts, and having a bowl of steel cut oats definitely fulfills this requirement. Steel cut oats are a great way to fuel up in the morning because they are high in fiber, protein, and calcium. They also keep you full until lunch, which is helpful when trying to avoid that mid-morning crash.

Good things don't come easy though, as steel cut oats take about 45 minutes to cook. This might be OK on a lazy Sunday, but many of us don't have extra time to spare when we're trying to get to work during the week.  But if you prep your oats the night before you can enjoy a warm satisfying bowl in about 10 minutes the next day.   1. In a medium to large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
  2. Stir in 1 cup of steel cut oats and let cook for one minute.
  3. Turn off heat, cover pot with lid, and forget about it until the next morning.
  4. When you wake up turn the heat back on and bring the oatmeal up to a boil. Reduce heat, and let simmer for about 7-10 minutes, stirring often. At this point, you can also add any spices or sweeteners to your oatmeal like cinnamon, nutmeg, or brown sugar.
  5. Spoon the oatmeal into a bowl and top it off with fresh or dried fruit and chopped nuts.

If you've never had steel cut oats, Winter is the time to try them since it's such a warm, comforting dish. I think steel cut oats are fuller in flavor than quick cook oats and have a better texture too. To save even more time in the morning, make a big batch of steel cut oats over the weekend, which you can store in the fridge for about a week. Then all you have to do is rewarm yourself a bowl before work.

2muchtv....i used to buy the expensive kind, but now aldi's is carrying it for much less. it's all the same. on a side note, my grandmother ate regular oatmeal (and real butter every day - i mean every. day.) and bacon and whatever she pleased (along with fruits and veggies grown in her own garden). she was never sick, lived at home, got around just fine, gardened, walked, went places, did things and lived to nearly 100. she passed suddenly and shocked everyone. she wasn't sick. but she lived a long and robust life and never got sick or had to go to a nursing home. Point is....don't sweat it. If you eat in moderation, exercise and live a healthy lifestyle, you should be fine (good genes, help, too....lol) You should be fine with Trader Joe's brand ;)

Any thoughts on Trader Joe's Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats? When I compared the nutritional content on this site vs LiveStrong.com, they appeared the same - that is, it didn't look like any nutrition was removed, yet it cooks faster. So, um, yea, feedback?

You can do the same thing in a slow cooker. I do this all the time and it works very well.

Another great trick is to boil the oats and water (amounts per package directions) for five minutes and then place in a thermos (I use a wide mouth thermos) over night. In the morning, the oats are perfectly cooked. If you leave them too long, they may need reheated, but a quick minute in the microwave takes care of that!

Good idea. I really like oatmeal, but don't want to take forever cooking them. The cafeteria wher I work serves oatmeal but I'm pretty sure it's the quick cooking kind.
