I have a mix of essentials and pretty things!  My Jonathan Adler pottery, a plant (hopefully I won't kill it!) a design book to read before falling asleep, my notebook for when my mind races at night and a silver box to take off my jewelry before I go to sleep!

I've got tissues, a radio / alarm clock, a heap of books and paper to write on, little notes (because I always think of stuff before I fall asleep), and a lamp. Pretty much zero decorations.

I love that little plant! On my nightstand (really, it's a dresser, which explains why there's so much on here) there's a blown glass plate on a stand given to us by my father-in-law, a lamp, an orchid, an inlaid wooden box to hold random objects, and usually a few books — right now, Sarah Waters's Little Strangers, Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and a board book about baby animals (for the baby).
