bo luc lac - Vietnamese Beef Salad

bo luc lac - vietnamese beef dishbo luc lac - vietnamese beef dishbo luc lac was a favorite vietnamese dish of mine, that i was introduced to by some friends while in college... but it seems that not all vietnamese restuarants carried this dish or even made it the same way.. and after trying to make it at home.. i realized how easy and delish it was to make myself!

1/2lb sirloin steak, cubed
1 onion, sliced
2 garlic, sliced
1 tablespoon oyster sauce
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 head of lettuce
2 roma tomatoes sliced
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon sea salt (asian spice salt works well too)
1 teaspoon ground pepper

1. In a medium bowl toss beef with the oyster sauce, soy sauce, and cornstarch and set aside.
2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add garlic and onions, quickly add the beef and stir-fry until done.
3. In a small bowl, add the sea salt, ground pepper and fresh lime juice (no need to mix, this your dipping sauce)
4. Serve beef in a platter over the lettuce and tomatoes. (This dish also goes well with rice).

Alternative sauce:
If you don't mind fish sauce follow the following for a slightly tangy, sweet, spicy, salty dressing.
I tend to use both. This dressing for the lettuce and tomatoes and the sea salt for dipping the beef.

Mix the following ingredients in a small bowl, and pour over dish.

2 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
2 dried chili peppers, chopped

Oh... if I'm thinking this is the same thing, my mom uses a different sauce that includes peanut oil and no limes (but then, she hates limes). I'll have to ask her how she makes it and compare. And another thing... I was asking my mom about this dish recently (hoping she would make it for my next visit).
