Plank. Every day. It strengthens the core, and without a strong core, your body doesn't serve you well. I like to do five minutes of core work every day, and in those moves, I always incorporate full plank, and two side planks, holding each from 30 seconds to one minute, depending upon my strength level that day. After recovering from a car accident, a physical therapist had me doing multiple planks and I learned their value that way.
I LOVE yoga. I originally tried it as a form of exercise, to stay limber and flexible. Then I learned it helped me to relax. As I continued practicing on and off for years, I learned that in helping me to relax, I found an inner calmness that I'd never had before, and then I finally learned what "taking it off the mat" meant. Yoga is amazing, and I have made wonderful friends at my current studio. There are so many different styles, so when someone tells me that it bores them or that it hurts them, I encourage them to try a different teacher, a different studio, a different style, etc. I think that if yoga were taught in schools, so many children would have better attention spans and fewer bahavioral issues.
I've been a runner on and off for years. Whenever I fall off the running wagon, it takes a while for me to get back on. I'm at that place now. What I did for my running workout is run one minute, walk one minute, for 30 minutes. I hope to be back to running nonstop for 30 minutes in the next eight weeks. Running is a challenge for me, so even the run/walk method is a workout for me.
My fitness must haves include the following:
running shoes
a good running bra
tech tops and shorts for running (when you live in the South, they are SO MUCH better than cotton)
my 16 year old Timex Ironman watch
a yoga mat
yoga clothes (they make a difference when doing inversions!)
dumbells of many weights
an assortment of workout dvds
a variety of water bottles for long runs and hot yoga
I gave up sugar and flour for a week, and the results are so amazing, that I tell those poor Girl Scout cookie pushers, "Sorry, but I don't do sugar or flour" (To which the poor girl replied, but they're fat free.) By giving up these two things, I no longer have sugar cravings. I actually had the strength to sit through a 90 minute luncheon and never touch the incredible looking triple chocolate layered cake with its creamy, dense frosting. Yes, it looked good, but I didn't crave it, which is so different from the old me. I encourage everyone to try and give up sugar and flour for a week and see what happens.
My favorite healthy snack is one tablespoon of organic, nothing added peanut butter spread thinly onto apple slices. It's sweet, crunchy, creamy and juicy. Mmm!
Spinach Salad:
Fresh spinach (I buy the bagged, cleaned kind)
1 Red pepper
1Yellow pepper
1/2 Red onion
1 cup Feta cheese (gorgonzola works too)
2 cups Grilled chicken
Mandarin orange
Walnuts or pecans (optional)
Toss lightly with a balsamic vinegar dressing made fresh with balsamic vinegar and olive oil or buy a nice bottled one.
