At what age can you apply sunscreen and bug repellent?

I live in a state where the sun is intense and West Nile prevalent. I would like to protect my baby. Our doctor said nothing before six months but I’ve been reading that while that’s true the incidence of skin cancer is greater and therefore the recommendation of six months is out the door. Ditto for West Nile. What did you do? What did you use?
Here’s an interesting link rating sunscreens –

I think I'd go with California Baby for suncreen but not sure about bug repellent.

love the Avon products, too. FYI- I just got this email offer on 50% off of their SSS with bug guard. http://shop.avon.com/shop/emails/IncCustTEXTGR0531saleBGPLUS_VCS.html I think I am going to use it myself :)

This is the SSS bug guard plus spf I was talking about:\ http://shop.avon.com/shop/product.asp?src_page=product_list.asp&level1_id=300&level2_id=306&pdept_id=514&dept_id=&pf_id=31774 Altho next time I order I might just get the kind that isn't blue tinted

I used Avon's Skin So Soft, they have a children's bug guard plus spf. I can't remember how high the spf is. It's really good. They have one that's blue tinted, it goes away after you rub it in, but it lets you know if you missed any areas.

Yes I did. My mother in law was the one who told me about it. She used it on my husband and his brothers when they were babies too. She said she thought it worked better than anything else. But I would suggest the one for sensitive skin for a baby, because the perfumes can be irritating.

Did you use Skin so Soft on your kids?

I always used sunscreen on my kids when they were babies, but bug repellent I steered away from, too many chemicals. I am a nutcase when it comes to bug repellent. I don't like using it even now. I always worry about the risk of cancer because of DEET, so I don't use it much. I prefer Skin So Soft by Avon, but sunscreen I always used, making sure not to get into the eyes, you know how they try to rub off anything you put on their faces.

Good point about the hands. I hadn't thought of that.

I used sunscreen even a little bit before 6 months when we went to Sea World and we were going to be in the sun a lot. The key is to remember not to put it on baby's hands, not because they stick their hands in their mouth, but because they could rub it in their eyes. As for the bug spray, I don't know, the thought grosses me out, so I just kept her inside during mosquito-ey hours.
